Is it possible to baby proof your house?

Trying to baby proof your house is like trying to find a toy that a dog won't chew through, it isn't going to happen. Babies have this unique ability for mischief, as soon as your back turns they do things which as adults we can't predict because we can't regress and think like a baby. However you can take steps to make you house as safe as possible, here are some tips to help you.

You don't need to baby proof every room. Baby proofing is expensive, and in some rooms can be unnecessary, if you are sure you are not going to take the baby into a room, like a study or a storage room etc, then instead think about getting a lock for that room door, then you have essentially baby proofed the whole room with only one device.

Think about what the baby can pull, if they can pull something then they will, electrical cords are a favorite. That lamp on the corner of your unit that you think is too high for them to reach? Think again. They will just pull the electrical cord and it will come down on their head, get rid of it! Also cover up all electrical outlets with cover plates so they don't try and stick objects or their fingers into them.

Get rid of any small objects that are within reach, you might like those little toy metal soldiers you were given, but a baby is just going to insert it into its mouth, ear or nose, not good for the soldier or your baby. Also keep anything else out of reach, just because something is big it doesn't mean it won't harm your baby, big heavy vases can be rocked until they fall, baskets can be pulled over etc, it is best just to keep everything out of reach until they get older.

Make sure all the cupboards are locked, and that any hazardous liquids are moved to high cupboards, most people think just locking the cupboard is sufficient, but if you forget to put the lock on, or the dog knocks the lock off, or heaven forbid, the baby manages to get round it somehow, then that is very dangerous indeed. Put the hazardous stuff up high so even if the little monster gets in then they are not going to find anything bad to drink!

That should be a start, look at all the products on the market and try to think of all the potential dangers you need to cover (like the sharp corners on furniture) and speak to any friends who have had a baby before, not only can they advise you but they probably have old baby proofing stuff they can give you too.
